Your HOA may be eligible to participate in the County Pet Waste Management Program!

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is partnering with HOAs to reduce pet waste bacteria levels in our local rivers and streams. We’ll work with the HOA to educate residents as well as install pet waste stations in common areas managed by HOAs.

Dogs at pet waste stationIn the end, it is a win-win situation. Bacteria issues caused by pet waste are addressed and the community benefits from not having pet waste left on the ground. Imagine poop free play areas for all!

Since December 2014, about 14,077 pounds of waste has been collected through this program. Imagine that – more than 7 tons of poop!

DEP is recruiting HOAs to join the program!

We are looking for homeowner associations that meet the following criteria:

  • Located in the Anacostia, Rock Creek, and Cabin John watersheds of Montgomery County (Contact us to find out if your HOA is located in one of the targeted areas)
  • Does not already have a pet waste management program
  • The HOA managing board is interested in partnering with the County on a pet waste management program

Eligible HOAs will receive:

  • Onsite evaluation
  • Outreach materials

  • Pet waste stations that will be maintained for a year for free by the County.  (The number of stations will be determined in partnership between the HOA and DEP)
  • At the end of the year, the HOA can decide to adopt the stations by taking over the maintenance.
