Make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a day ON, not a day off!

MLK Day is a federal and school holiday, but more importantly, it has become an annual Day of Service celebrated across the country. Honor the memory and spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by volunteering to improve our community!

On January 15, 2018, volunteer at a Day of Service event near you. Not sure where to start? Here are some suggestions from our partners:


Neighbors of the Northwest Branch:

This local watershed restoration group is hosting two stream clean-ups in mid January, on the following dates:

On January 13, 9:30 – 11:30 AM, the Neighbors of the Northwest Branch (NNWB) are hosting a stream clean-up at Broadacres Local Park (710 Beacon Rd, Silver Spring), adjacent to JoAnn LeLeck Elementary School and NWBSVP. Volunteers should wear warm clothes, including long pants and closed toe shoes. Supplies will be provided. Student Service Learning (SSL) hours will be provided. On January 15, 9:30-11:30 AM, their second stream clean-up is scheduled to take place in the Lamberton Tributary, at the dead-end of Lamberton Drive next to Kemp Mill Estates Local Park (120 Claybrook Dr., Wheaton). Wear warm clothes, including long pants and closed toe shoes. Supplies will be provided. Student Service Learning (SSL) hours provided. Please contact Laura if you plan to attend:

Volunteer Center Events:

Montgomery County Volunteer Center and local partners host larger events indoors with a variety of family friendly service projects.

Some of the projects from last year included: packaging food for the hungry; making dog toys for the animal shelter; creating blankets for hospice facilities; and crafting appreciation cards for military troops. Learn more.

Join Montgomery Parks for service projects the entire MLK Weekend: January 13, 14, and 15.
