What does it mean to electrify your home?

During the second week of Energy Action Month, the spotlight is on your home. A key way to help the County meet its climate goals is by electrifying home appliances/systems by replacing fossil fuel-powered systems with electric alternatives. Heat pumps are an ideal, energy-efficient alternative to furnaces, boilers, and air conditioners. Efficient electric water heaters are also an option worth exploring.

On Saturday, October 15, 2022 – Jim Conlon from Elysian Energy discussed how homeowners can switch to electric heat pumps, if you missed it, the session was recorded and his presentation can be found here: Heat Pumps 101.pptx. How can homeowners take action?

If you’re interested in switching out a gas or fossil fuel-powered system with an electric alternative, take Montgomery County’s Electrify Everything pledge today! By taking the Electrify Everything Pledge, you can also opt to be connected to the County’s certified installer (to be announced in fall 2022) to learn more about making the switch from fossil fuels to electric and what incentives you might be eligible for as you electrify your home.

Another action you can take is finding your current water heater and determining how old it is. If it is over 10 years old, it might be a good idea to replace it with a heat pump water heater.

What can renters do to get involved?

Show your landlord heat pump replacement options and EnergyGuide savings. Rewiring America also has a renter’s checklist that you can look through to get a better sense of what you might want to electrify. There are also a few tips and resources on how to talk with your landlord about making your apartment or rental home more energy efficient from Vox and EWEB.
