Each year over the President’s Day weekend, Maryland shoppers can take advantage of our state’s Shop Maryland Energy Tax Free Weekend and save the 6% sales tax on qualifying ENERGY STAR appliances; beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, February 19, through midnight on Monday February 21, 2022. This statewide sales tax holiday showcases the vital role that energy efficient appliances play for residents, businesses and our environment.
Since 1992, the ENERGY STAR program and partners have helped American families and businesses save more than 4 trillion kilowatt-hours of electricity and reduce over 3.5 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emission which is equivalent to the annual emissions of more than 750 million cars. In 2018 alone, ENERGY STAR, along with partner organizations helped Americans avoid $35 billion in energy costs.
In addition to the tax savings, additional utility rebates may also apply. Be sure to check in your service area before you start shopping. Check: BGE, Pepco, Potomac Edison, and Washington Gas. For more help, check the ENERGY STAR website rebate finder.
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to get fun goodies from our Energy Ambassadors at the following events during Presidents Day Weekend:
Only air conditioners, clothes washers, clothes dryers, furnaces, heat pumps, standard size refrigerators, dehumidifiers, boilers and programmable thermostats that have been designated as meeting or exceeding the applicable Energy Star efficiency requirements developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy and are authorized to carry the ENERGY STAR label are exempt during the Shop Maryland Energy weekend. In addition, the exemption applies to the sale of any solar water heater.
No. Only the specific items listed are exempt during the tax-free weekend. Other products will be subject to the sales and use tax even though they may be designated with the ENERGY STAR label.
You had a chance. There should have been a link by product type. You made it impossible to figure out. And now I’m disappointed. If your purported purpose was getting me interested in HELPING keep energy costs down and saving money—you failed.
Marie,
I am not sure what you were looking for, the EPA has this list to help you find ENERGY STAR appliances: https://www.energystar.gov/rebate-finder?page_number=97. Unfortunately, we don’t have a list of all qualifying materials as this is not a County program but a state program, we just promote the materials they provide us: https://www.marylandtaxes.gov/divisions/comp/Shop_Maryland_Energy/2022-11×17-Poster-Shop-Maryland-Energy.pdf
If you needed a new appliance, I hope you were able to find one this weekend and not pay sales tax.
