During the Spring of 2020, the North Hills of Sligo Creek Pollinator and Native Plant Gardens community volunteers, with support from the Montgomery County Government, began working to beautify the community while promoting environmental sustainability.

The development of Garden #1 St. Andrews Way’ was initiated by the community in July 2020, followed by Garden #2 ‘Argyle Gardens’ in April 2021. These pollinator gardens featuring native plants play a vital role in supporting ecosystems by providing habitats for native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. They contribute to biodiversity, food security, and protection of natural resources. Permaculture techniques and planting native plants that are resistant to deer and drought conserve water and minimize pesticide use in the garden. In addition, the gardens have already been designated as Monarch Way Stations and Wildlife Habitats by the National Wildlife Foundation. Community gardens not only benefit the environment, but also promote stronger neighborhoods, add beauty, and foster a sense of community.

The initiative was initially proposed by Eric Cathcart, President of the North Hills of Sligo Creek community, with five primary goals:

  1. Inspiration and Promotion
  2. Ecologically Sound Garden
  3. Experientially Rich and an Interactive Garden
  4. Dynamic Garden
  5. Natural Diversity and Resilience

“Creating this garden was a collective effort, and we are excited to share it with our neighbors and elected officials,” said Eric Cathcart, President of the North Hills of Sligo Creek community. “It reminds us of the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainable living.”

In June, the North Hills of Sligo Creek Civic Association thanked and recognized community members, the County and County Executive, for their help and support, and dedicated the gardens to the young residents of the community.
