Volunteers needed to join DEP’s Solid Waste Advisory Committee!

DEP’s Recycling and Resource Management Division is looking for volunteers to serve on the Solid Waste Advisory Committee (SWAC) to advise the County Executive and the County Council on the County’s solid waste and recycling efforts.  The County has an ambitious goal to reduce waste and recycle more, aiming for Zero Waste!

We are looking for applicants representing the County’s broad geographic areas, including representatives from businesses and organizations, multi-family properties (apartments and condominiums), solid waste/recycling collectors and facility operators, and the public.

Some areas of SWAC’s focus include reviewing and offering recommendations on the County’s ten-year solid waste management plans and evaluating the impact of the solid waste management program on residents, institutions, businesses, and industry. The Committee also recommends public education programs, as well as State and local legislation necessary to accomplish effective solid waste/recycling management.

Members serve three-year terms without compensation but are eligible for reimbursement for travel and dependent care for in-person meetings attended. The full SWAC usually meets nine times per year. The Committee currently meets virtually by video- and teleconference usually on the first Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Members are expected to also actively participate on one or more subcommittees. When in-person meetings resume, the Committee will meet in Rockville.
