Earth Month Events

 

Sat, April 1: Recycling Volunteer Orientation Training from 9am-11am

Location: Montgomery County Executive Office Building, 6th Floor, Rockville, MD. To register, email Michelle Devillo.

 

Sat, April 1: Annual Patuxent River Cleanup

  • Volunteers are needed to help clean up the Patuxent River watershed at sites ranging from Upper Marlboro to Damascus. Sign up for a site near you.

 

Sat, April 1: Creek Sweep and Garlic Mustard Challenge

 

Sun, April 2: Paper Shredding and Recycling Event from 10am – 2pm

Damascus High School, 25921 Ridge Road Damascus, Maryland 20872

These paper shredding and recycling events are free of charge and open to all County residents. Please, no businesses. Limit: 5 paper bags or small cardboard boxes of paper per household/vehicle. All paper will be shredded on-site. These are drive-through events, and we ask you to stay in your vehicle. For everyone’s safety, you will not be able to watch your paper being shredded.  The last car must be in line by 2:00 p.m.  For more details, view the flyer.

 

Sun, April 2: Water WatchDogs Pollution ID and Reporting Workshop from 8:30am – 11am

  • Water quality expert Lori Lilly will help people identify water pollution and the Water WatchDog co-founders will show people how to use the Water WatchDog email to report pollution they spot in the Creek or see on the streets heading for the Creek. Special local focus: Sligo Creek between Forest Glen and Colesville Road.
  • Please register by 5pm on April 1 to avorce@aol.com. Space is limited.

Sat, April 8: 29th Annual Potomac River Watershed Cleanup

 

Globe with LeafSun, April 9: Documentary Film Screening: Hometown Habitat from 4pm – 6pm 

Location: BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Dr, Germantown, MD 20874

Hometown Habitat is an educational documentary focused on showing how and why native plants are critical to the survival and vitality of local ecosystems.  The director and producer, Catherine Zimmerman, will be on hand to talk about the film. This is a free event in partnership with the Environmental Film Festival in the Nation’s Capital, DEP, Montgomery Countryside Alliance and the BlackRock Center for the Arts.

 

Celebrate Sustainable Transportation Week!  April 8 – 14

During the County’s Earth Month celebration, the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) will be promoting Transportation Week with activities and events that inform the public about its commitment to the environment and help to educate everyone about transportation alternatives that are more sustainable.

 

April 10 -13: Capital Bikeshare promotions each day from 11am – 2pm 

Stop by one of MCDOT’s Bikeshare stations listed below and learn how to use the Capital Bikeshare system. Try out a bikeshare bike, take a bikeshare trip for free, and enter for a chance to win a yearlong Capital Bikeshare membership, free helmets and other prizes.

  • April 10 from 11am to 2pm at Fallsgrove Blvd and Fallsgrove Dr., Rockville
  • April 11 from 11am to 2pm at  Silver Spring Metro (Colesville Road and Wayne Avenue)
  • April 12 from 11am to 2 pm at Friendship Boulevard and Willard Avenue
  • April 13 from  11am to 2 pm at Fenton Street and Ellsworth Drive

 

Fri, April 14: Discover DOT Transit Options from 3pm to 5pm 

Learn more about transit options by stopping by the Shady Grove Metro Station for free transit information and advice and fun giveaways.

 

Mon, April 10 and Wed, April 12: Ride On Customer Appreciation Days

Ride On will hold Customer Appreciation Days to explain a new Ride On service that will be starting in the fall and provide information about current Ride On services.

  • Wed, April 12 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at the Lakeforest Transit Center

Light Bulb with GlobeThurs, April 20: Green Ribbon Cutting for the First Completed Commercial PACE Project from 9am – 12pm

Location: Comfort Inn Shady Grove, 16216 Frederick Rd, Gaithersburg

Montgomery County DEP is recognizing the building owner, property managers, and contractors for their achievement as Montgomery County and Maryland’s first completed C-PACE project with a “green” ribbon-cutting ceremony. The event is free and open to the public–all are welcome to attend.

 Thurs, April 20: Green Business Forum from 8am – 10am 

Location: Montgomery County Chamber of Commerce: 51 Monroe Street, Suite 1800, Rockville

Learn about the multiple ways in which you can modernize and enhance transit benefits for your employees and reduce their costs while doing your part for the environment.

 

Sat, April 22: Earth Day!

 

Sat, April 22: Anacostia River Cleanups

  • Volunteer with the Anacostia Watershed Society in the area’s premiere annual Earth Day Cleanup. Join over 2,000 AWS volunteers cleaning up our neighborhoods, parks, streams, and the Anacostia River.

Sun, April 23: Earth Day Festival at Brookside Gardens from 12pm – 4pm

  • Our planet is priceless! Come to Brookside to celebrate our world, and learn ways to keep it healthy. Join us in the morning for a volunteer project in the gardens. The afternoon offers something for everyone: a green craft fair, native plant sale, community art project, family activities, tours of the Gardens, live music with the band Nature Jams, and more.

DATE TBD: Celebration of the 2 Year Anniversary of Tree Montgomery

 

Sat, April 29: Save the Frogs Day at Locust Grove Nature Center from 1pm – 4pm

  • Join us at Locust Grove for a day of celebrating these interesting animals. Hop to it to learn about their amazing abilities through activities, presentations, and a whole lot of fun! Learn about frogs, toads, salamanders and the ways YOU can save them!

The Montgomery County GreenFest! – Sat, May 6

Our Earth Month celebration culminates on May 6th at the 3rd annual Montgomery County GreenFest! Bring the whole family to the party.  We’ll have music, food trucks, exhibitors, food demonstrations, and more! Don’t miss out.

GreenFest has activities for all ages:

  • Relax to local musicians (bring a blanket to lay on the lawn by the playground)
  • Bring the kids to our new Kids Pavilion with games, arts and crafts and special guests
  • Visit the Electric Vehicle and Car Show, or even take a test drive
  • Explore the more than 100 exhibitors and vendors
  • Participate in a workshop or a local food demonstration
  • Grab a bite to eat at a food truck
  • And much more!
