Two-Day Natural Dye Workshop – Natural Dyes from the Garden
July 21 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm$100
Transforming Textiles Sustainably with Resident Artist, Patricia Powell Kessler
Museum Member: $90, Non-Member: $100
Materials Fee: $30 paid direct to artist
Experienced textile artists and newbies are invited to explore readily available sources of color from our environment. Surprising hues can be obtained by processing roots, leaves, bark and flowers. Beginners and advanced artists are will find safe sources of color for creating a natural palette. We will begin with an overview of how to prepare textiles for the dye process. Mordants and the requirements for dyeing silk, linen, cotton and wool will be discussed and demonstrated.
Participants will be given packets of silk, cotton, and linen cloth, some wool yarn and a silk scarf that have been prepared for dyeing. Then the fun begins as we make the dye pots. A variety of supplied fabrics will allow you to come away with a swatch book of colors. Using folding techniques or tie dye the silk scarves will be transformed with a single dye. Printed directions for preparing dyes and mordanting cloth, a bibliography and supply sources will be given to each participant for future reference.
The workshop will be held in Patricia’s ground floor studio in the Bank Barn from 10 am until 4 pm with a one-hour lunch break from 12:30 until 1:30 pm. Participants are invited to eat bagged lunches on the Museum grounds or visit the restaurants and cafes nearby.
Bring a pair of long kitchen gloves. Wear closed toed shoes and an apron or clothing that you won’t mind staining.
