The Climate Action Plan also details the effects of a changing climate on Montgomery County and includes strategies to reduce climate-related risk to the County’s residents\, businesses\, and the built and natural environment \nOMG will also introduce its Climate Resilience Project launching in 2021 due in part from a generous donation from Pepco’s Sustainable Communities Grant Program. Pepco\, along with their program administrator\, Rock Creek Conservancy\, launched the Sustainable Communities Grant Program\, providing $125\,000 in grants annually to fund open space and environmental projects and resiliency projects across Pepco’s District of Columbia and Maryland service area. OMG was one of 10 local municipalities\, recreational authorities\, and nonprofits to receive grant funding. DESCRIPTION:The State of Maryland and the Netherlands have a long-standing cooperation empowering communities to become resilient\, to prepare for climate change impacts\, and to work in an integrated manner to reduce vulnerabilities. Both regions are expected to be affected by seasonal droughts and heat waves\, frequent thunderstorms\, an increased risk of flooding\, and sea level rise. Maryland and the Netherlands are working together with communities and partners to proactively implement adaptation strategies and are eager to build on the close ties between these regions to exchange lessons learned and best practices\, and collaborate closer together on these topics. \nMEMA\, Maryland Commerce\, and the Netherlands Water Partnership are organizing a joint Maryland-Netherlands event on Tuesday\, January 26 about climate resilience. Participants’ shared their experiences and highlighted their information needs for coping with the changing climate. The Intersection of Climate and Social Justice will be a three part series aimed to educate and inform our community about the intersection of Climate and Social justice including the history of racial inequities\, climate change challenges and solutions in cities\, and the implications of the sustainability industries lack of diversity. \nA history of place-based racial inequities will be part one of this series and will focus on providing a fundamental understanding of how institutional racism has impacted the health and well-being of BIPOC communities. \nOur speaker Dr. Lorena Estrada-Martínez is a social epidemiologist and Assistant Professor of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts Boston. Her research on Latino and Black youth has focused on the impact of cultural and structural dimensions of family and neighborhood factors on disparities in mental health and behavioral outcomes from adolescence through adulthood. \nWe hope you will join us and share this event with others! \nZoom details will be sent to registered attendees 48 hours before the event.

DESCRIPTION:About this Event \nThe purpose of these calls is to inform the public about EPA’s environmental justice work and enhance opportunities to maintain an open dialogue with environmental justice advocates. The calls first began in 2010 and were an invaluable tool for EPA to learn about environmental justice needs in communities around the country. As environmental justice continues to be integrated into EPA programs and policies\, the Agency hopes that relaunching these calls will help reaffirm EPA’s continued commitment to work with community groups and the public to strengthen local environmental and human health outcomes. \nRegistration: Due to limited space\, participation in this call will be on a first come\, first-served basis.
