SUMMARY:350MoCo February Monthly Meeting — Deep Dive into Climate Justice Bills
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Tuesday evening\, February 27\, at 7pm for 350MoCo’s February Monthly Meeting. We’re thrilled to announce that two deeply informed and knowledgeable speakers will join us to give updates on key climate justice\, clean energy and utility transition bills before the Assembly this session. The Zoom link to join is here: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84103142728?pwd=MFMvODNmOGlUTldhQm5vejUreDNKUT09 \nThe 2024 session of the Maryland General Assembly is almost at its mid-point. A record number of bills have been filed this year\, so legislators’ workload is particularly high. To add to the burden\, the looming budget crunch has brought laser attention to the costs and revenue-generating potential of each bill. \nIn the midst of all the pressure and swirl\, how are climate-related and climate justice bills faring? We are very pleased to announce two deeply knowledgeable speakers who can cast a lot of light on the challenges and progress of some of the key climate justice bills we are following this session: \n\nEmily Scarr has been Executive Director of the Maryland Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) since 2013. This year\, she has been deeply involved in strategizing on several bills\, including the EmPOWER reform legislation.  Emily has agreed to join us to provide an update on this key bill’s progress through Committees and hearings so far and its prospects for passing.\nLaurel Peltier is a long-time energy advocate for low-income households in north Baltimore’s Govans neighborhood\, and coordinator of the Maryland Energy Advocates Coalition. Through her terrific work\, she found that “third party energy retailers” promising low cost clean energy have in fact overcharged Marylanders by $1.2 billion over just the past few years while failing to support clean power development.  Worse\, a big part of this scam has fallen on low-income households.  Laurel will talk about HB 267/SB 1\, the Electricity and Gas – Retail Supply – Regulation and Consumer Protection bill\, which she helped shape to clean up Maryland’s clean energy market in key ways.\n\nJoin us to learn about how the General Assembly works in general and the progress of key clean energy\, climate justice and climate-related bills in particular. Emily and Laurel are both tracking a variety of other bills\, so can answer many questions on those. \nMark your calendars and join us at 7pm SHARP next Tuesday\, February 27. Zoom link (cut and paste into your browser) is here: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84103142728?pwd=MFMvODNmOGlUTldhQm5vejUreDNKUT09

SUMMARY:Worm Composting Teach-In
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Gabriel Soto for an educational workshop about home composting methods! \nWorm composting is a popular new method of processing food waste that’s being used by households\, companies\, and governments. Up to 30% of your current food waste can be safely and efficiently processed right in your home\, saving energy and significantly reducing emissions in the process. \nThis workshop will introduce you to the basic principles of worm composting and its use in today’s homes\, and provide information on how to better dispose of food waste without hassle. You’ll learn how to make and maintain a worm bin\, how to dispose of food waste in it\, and how to collect and use the organic fertilizer it creates. All materials will be provided. \nThis event is free and open to the public. RSVP using link to reserve your space. \nAbout Gabriel Soto \nGabriel Soto is one of the artists showing in the group exhibition\, Gestures of Disappearance\, curated by 2023 Bresler Resident Murat Cem Mengüç. Mengüç’s Gestures of Disappearance is a contemporary art project about climate change and\, specifically\, the carbon footprint of art making. As such\, it has a multidisciplinary nature\, including not just artistic expression and reflection\, but also actual carbon emission calculations of the works involved in their presentation. \nAside from painting\, Soto is a gardener who has engaged in several ecological projects\, including growing a food garden\, planting native plant species\, and composting. He’s been interested in environmentalism and self-reliance since the beginning of the pandemic.

SUMMARY:RainScape Your Yard – Session I: Evaluating Stormwater Solutions for Home Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Ann English\, Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection staff \nSession I: Learn how environmentally friendly landscapes\, such as conservation landscapes and rain gardens\, can help manage stormwater issues on residential properties. We’ll review steps to planning a RainScape including site evaluation and determining the type and scale of project that best suits your needs. \nA RainScape is a landscape or design technique that helps reduce stormwater runoff from individual properties. RainScape projects can include rain gardens\, conservation landscapes\, green roofs\, and permeable pavements. The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection offers a rebate program for approved RainScape projects for homeowners. To be eligible for a rebate\, participants must apply and be approved for installation based on a submitted plan before projects are installed. These two sessions are intended to help homeowners create a RainScape design plan. Classes are open to anyone regardless if applying for a RainScape rebate. \n\n\n\nNOTE: This class is offered virtually as a live\, online webinar though the Zoom platform with audience Q & A. After registering\, a link will be emailed to you 24 hours prior to the live webinar. A recording of the lecture will be sent to registrants to access online for up to 30 days. Please ensure your Active Montgomery account is updated with your correct email address.\n\n\nREGISTER HERE: https://mdmontgomeryctyweb.myvscloud.com/webtrac/web/iteminfo.html?Module=AR&FMID=196920103
