If so, the Montgomery County Department of Parks is the place for you! We are currently seeking a Park Planner in our Park Planning and Stewardship Division.

The Park Planner will conduct countywide planning studies and develop recommendations for individual parks to meet systemwide needs. Park planners analyze demographic and geospatial data and community engagement processes to shape the future of our parks. We are looking for candidates who love parks and have an interest in outdoor recreation planning, including athletic fields.

The Park Planning Section of the Park Planning and Stewardship Division plans facilities and amenities on parkland, performs data analysis, makes maps, and works closely with planners at the Montgomery County Planning Department on the park and open space recommendations in sector and master plans. Reporting directly to the Long-Range Park Planning Supervisor, the role will involve collaborating with other departments, soliciting input from the public, and presenting recommendations to the Montgomery County Park and Planning Board.

Examples of Important Duties

General Park Planning

  • Supports data-supported, big thinking and long-range planning for the Parks Department.
  • Develops park master plans, programs of requirements, conceptual plans, and operational plans for new and existing parks.
  • Assists Planning Department staff in the development of master plans and sector plans.
  • Analyses facility and user trends, demographic data, and survey data to identify park facility needs and service gaps.
  • Presents park planning recommendations to the public.
  • Creates clear and attractive maps.

Outdoor Recreation and Athletic Field Planning

  • Serves as the key planner and subject matter expert for outdoor recreational facilities for the Department.
  • Reviews and analyzes trends in innovative outdoor recreational facilities.
  • Coordinates continuously with Athletic Field Program staff.
  • Develops an outdoor recreation strategic framework and conducts ongoing outdoor recreation needs assessments.
  • Develops, maintains, and updates Parks’ athletic field inventory.
  • Analyzes athletic field supply, user demand, and facility-permitting information.
  • Identifies and prioritizes recommendations for new and renovated facilities.
  • Makes practical and implementable site-specific recommendations for new and renovated athletic fields using GIS, the Adobe Creative Suite, and SketchUp, considering size requirements, slope, drainage, and natural vegetation, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Geography, Architecture, Parks and Recreation, Transportation, Urban Design, Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Economics or any related field.
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional level planning experience or specific area of assignment such as transportation planning, environmental planning or urban planning.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
  • Valid driver’s license (depending on area of assignment) in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
