SUMMARY:High Performance Hospitality on the Beltway: Tour Home2Suites Silver Spring
DESCRIPTION:Join USGBC-NCR on February 20th for a panel and tour of the new LEED Platinum certified Home2Suites by Hilton in Silver Spring! Experts from the Duffie Companies and HOK will present on how they conceptualized\, designed\, built and operate a super-efficient hotel right on the Capital Beltway. The Presentation will provide an overview of the sustainable aspects of the project\, project challenges\, opportunities and future goals. The Duffie Companies will also discuss their Passive House and Zero Net Energy aspirations on future projects. \nThe event will begin with panel presentation\, followed by a tour of the facility and networking. \nWhy is Home2Suite so sustainable? Compared to a standard hotel its size\, the 100-room Home2 Suites by Hilton Silver Spring offers a water savings of 42 percent and energy savings of 35 percent. As with other LEED Platinum hotels\, the Home2 Suites by Hilton Silver Spring will generate some of its own energy. A 60-kilowatt rooftop photovoltaic array will provide 9 percent of the hotel’s electricity needs. Also making the hotel energy efficient is LED lighting throughout the property\, a guestroom energy management system\, a quiet\, centralized variable refrigerant flow HVAC system\, a lighting control system for back-of-house lighting\, extra-insulated windows\, and robust air sealing. Continuously insulated sheathing was used to get a high level of insulation throughout the building’s shell. Sound absorbing mineral wool insulation was used in wall cavities and on the side of the hotel closest to traffic windows were laminated for additional sound attenuation.

SUMMARY:Masterclass: The Value of Adding Commissioning to Your Project
DESCRIPTION:Experience and research demonstrates that Commissioning on a new construction project has the potential to bring significant value to a project. However\, it can be challenging to understand the requirements and options of the various commissioning approaches and how they play together in the full gamut of design\, construction\, and occupancy phases. By hiring a Commissioning Agent just to comply with code or to check the box on a scorecard\, owners and project teams miss out on the real potential they have at hand to deliver high quality buildings and systems\, with functionalities as designed and expected by the owner. \nThis class will demystify the varieties of Commissioning requirements and options and instruct on how to apply Commissioning to maximize value to a project. Starting with the process for LEEDv4 BD+C Fundamental and Enhanced Commissioning\, the presentation explains the approach and integration and specifically what clients and project teams should be expecting during the design\, construction and occupancy phases. The presentation will also highlight the IGCC 2012 & 2018 Commissioning requirements (current & future Montgomery County code) and how they differ from LEED v4 requirements. The presentation then further goes into the interaction and relevance of “specialty” Commissioning disciplines such as Monitoring-Based and Building Enclosure Commissioning and how other LEED credits\, such as energy modeling\, can create synergies with the Commissioning process. The presentation is backed by real-world examples from projects in the United States and Europe and includes recent survey results on the costs and benefits of Commissioning. \nLunch provided.

Help each other out by sharing experiences that have made you go ‘what?’\, ‘OH NO!’\, and ‘Grrrrr’ (or Blerg). Join us over a mocktail\, cocktail\, soda or beer as we share experiences in our careers\, past or present that were unique\, hilarious\, confusing\, or frustrating. \nWe will get together in groups to vent\, laugh\, cry\, and be supportive to one another about going through and discovering what the modern grind truly means – and maybe even share ways of overcoming\, ignoring\, or encouraging those moments in our careers. \nAbout our Host Venue: \nCome check out Adam’s Morgan’s new cultral salon and cocktail bar\, Lapop. \nAbout USGBC NCR Emerging Professionals: \nThe UGSBC NCR Emerging Professionals Committee provides opportunities for young professionals\, and those breaking into the green building industry to network and grow professionally. The group organizes a range of fun volunteer\, networking and educational events to help develop camaraderie and career connections for professionals within the green building industry. This program is open to anyone. \nYou can join our LinkedIn group and be in the loop with our Emerging Professionals Newsletter!
