SUMMARY:High Performance Hospitality on the Beltway: Tour Home2Suites Silver Spring
DESCRIPTION:Join USGBC-NCR on February 20th for a panel and tour of the new LEED Platinum certified Home2Suites by Hilton in Silver Spring! Experts from the Duffie Companies and HOK will present on how they conceptualized\, designed\, built and operate a super-efficient hotel right on the Capital Beltway. The Presentation will provide an overview of the sustainable aspects of the project\, project challenges\, opportunities and future goals. The Duffie Companies will also discuss their Passive House and Zero Net Energy aspirations on future projects. \nThe event will begin with panel presentation\, followed by a tour of the facility and networking. \nWhy is Home2Suite so sustainable? Compared to a standard hotel its size\, the 100-room Home2 Suites by Hilton Silver Spring offers a water savings of 42 percent and energy savings of 35 percent. As with other LEED Platinum hotels\, the Home2 Suites by Hilton Silver Spring will generate some of its own energy. A 60-kilowatt rooftop photovoltaic array will provide 9 percent of the hotel’s electricity needs. Also making the hotel energy efficient is LED lighting throughout the property\, a guestroom energy management system\, a quiet\, centralized variable refrigerant flow HVAC system\, a lighting control system for back-of-house lighting\, extra-insulated windows\, and robust air sealing. Continuously insulated sheathing was used to get a high level of insulation throughout the building’s shell. Sound absorbing mineral wool insulation was used in wall cavities and on the side of the hotel closest to traffic windows were laminated for additional sound attenuation.
