SUMMARY:GreenScapes Symposium
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a fascinating day of presentations highlighting design strategies that make it easier and more effective to integrate native plants into a variety of landscapes. \nGardening for wildlife and designing landscapes that mimic nature are being embraced by homeowners and design professionals alike. But leveraging native plants for specific environments and design outcomes can often be challenging. \nObstacles can range from tough site conditions to urban gardens with limited space for creating beneficial ecosystems. How can we protect the function and structure of the natural ecology by substituting natives for invasive species? \nLearn exciting and novel uses of plants\, planting design\, and application of ecological principles to overcome these roadblocks and achieve high-impact\, environmentally sustainable designs. \nThis will be offered as a series of live online lectures using Zoom with audience Q&A incorporated into the program. Each session will be recorded and a link to watch the symposium will be emailed to all participants. \nCost: $45 per person until January 7\, 2022; $55 per person after January 8\, 2022

SUMMARY:Civic Responsibility and Community Engagement for Collective Good: Climate Change Resilience\, Sustainable Environment and Commonwealth
DESCRIPTION:Introduction and Program Overview \nAs the decade unfolds\, citizens\, local communities\, states\, industry and the commonwealth of the American nation face growing threats from unsustainable environmental pollution\, global warming and climate change. While these shared threats are global in scale and scope\, individual civic responsibility and community engagement historically serve as the foundation for local\, state\, regional\, national and international action for the common good in America. At the present time\, local\, state and federal government agencies and essential public utility water and electricity companies are using climate/ environmental/ and management sciences in the public interest\, to protect the collective good. In this regard\, local governments\, municipalities\, mayors (Climate Mayors)\, state governors (United States Climate Alliance)\, universities\, business and industry organizations are working with national and international science based regulatory agencies and global industry standards bodies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions\, and environmental pollution. \nIn turn\, governments\, citizens\, states\, faith congregations\, universities\, business and industry are working to protect the collective good\, natural environment and commonwealth of local communities\, the American nation – and the global community. However\, civic responsibility and community engagement in America requires higher moral and universal spiritual principles to strengthen cooperation for local\, state\, national and global climate resilience\, sustainable environment and commonwealth. Therefore\, moral and universal spiritual faith principles are needed to build unity and strengthen civic and community engagement – at the local level\, within states and across the American nation. \nCollective action for climate change resilience\, sustainable environment and commonwealth is now based on clean water\, renewable energy transition\, environmental protection and natural resource conservation. We invite you participate in our public program on civic responsibility and local community engagement for climate resilience\, sustainable environment and commonwealth. In the program\, the guest speakers and audience will discuss the following issues and themes; local government programs\, essential public utility company contribution for safe clean water\, scientific tools and standards\, business/industry technologies\, and the moral and spiritual foundations of climate change resilience\, sustainable environments and commonwealth – at the local\, state\, regional\, national and global levels. \nDate: Sunday\, November 7\, 2021 Time: 3:00pm-5:00pm /US Eastern Standard Time\nVirtual Zoom Program: Free Registration\nGuest Speakers: Stan Edwards\, Chief of Division for Energy\, Climate\, & Compliance\, Montgomery County\, Maryland-Department of Environmental Protection\nJodi Rose\, Executive Director\, Interfaith Partners for the Chesapeake\nWSSC Water – TBD\nIan Hamilton\, Climate and Environment Specialist\, U.S. Baha’i’ Office of Public Affairs of the United States\nReba Carruth–Program Moderator-Adjunct Professor\, Georgetown University

SUMMARY:Powered from Above: A Solstice Seminar for Montgomery County Congregations
DESCRIPTION:Since the fall day twelve years ago when a young priest climbed up to the roof of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church to bless their solar panels\, “our newest stained-glass windows\,” while the choir sang from the parking lot below\, over a hundred faith communities in our region have taken climate action by shifting their sanctuaries to solar power. Now\, Montgomery County Green Bank is offering a new solar financing product that makes it easier for solar developers to arrange no-money-down solar projects for Montgomery County congregations and organizations. Since the program’s launch in February\, the Green Bank has been working with a half dozen faith-based institutions to explore financing solar projects with no out-of-pocket cost to them. \nAt noon on the longest day of the year\, join Interfaith Power & Light and the Montgomery County Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (MCFACS) to explore what the power of sunlight could do for your community: we’ll learn about solar financing for non-profits\, hear testimonials from congregations that are powering their buildings with energy “from above\,” and receive an invitation from the Montgomery County Green Bank to explore or re-explore a fully financed solar project for our own buildings. Please invite the financial and operations decision-makers from your congregations to join us\, too! \nRegister for link below. \n(Photo by: Carlo La Porta )
