How do plastic bags cause migratory displacement and how can used bedsheets be part of the solution?

Research shows that global plastic waste has more than doubled since 2000, contributing to climate change and creating conditions for increased flooding. In 2022 there were 2.6 million new internal displacements due to natural disasters across the Americas.

With this information we decided to reduce our plastic footprint by reducing the bags we use to distribute rice and beans to our families. Our partner, the amazing UUCF-Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, created 100’s of reusable bags out of used sheets. Xiomara, our amazing community leader, then wrote the names of Food Justice families on them, so they can be reused for future distributions. A win-win for our families and the planet!

Food Justice DMV is a volunteer colectiva delivering food & standing in solidarity with thousands of immigrant neighbors while also applying an eco-lens to reduce their footprint and safeguard el planeta.

¿Cómo provocan las bolsas de plástico los desplazamientos migratorios y cómo pueden las sábanas usadas formar parte de la solución?

Las investigaciones muestran que los residuos plásticos en el mundo se han más que duplicado desde el año 2000, lo que contribuye al cambio climático y crea condiciones para el aumento de las inundaciones. En 2022 se produjeron 2,6 millones de nuevos desplazamientos internos por desastres naturales en toda América.

Con esta información, decidimos reducir nuestra huella de plástico reduciendo las bolsas que utilizamos para distribuir arroz y frijoles a nuestras familias. Nuestro socio, la increíble Congregación UUCF-Unitarian Universalist Congregation de Fairfax, creó cientos de bolsas reutilizables con sábanas usadas. Xiomara, nuestra increíble líder comunitaria, escribió los nombres de las familias de Justicia Alimentaria en ellas, para que puedan ser reutilizadas en futuras distribuciones. ¡Un ganar-ganar para nuestras familias y el planeta!

Food Justice DMV es una organización colectiva de voluntarios que entrega alimentos y se solidariza con miles de vecinos inmigrantes, al mismo tiempo que aplica una lente ecológico para reducir su huella y proteger el planeta.
